About Green Lake‎ > ‎

Message from the Principal

My name is Cheryl Grinager, and I’m proud to be the principal of Green Lake School.  Please take time to read the following information to see what a great school we have. Our school has a wonderful environment for student learning and development. At Green Lake, we believe every child can achieve and be successful.

Green Lake Elementary is part of the Seattle School District in Seattle, Washington. Our teachers, instructional assistants, secretaries, therapists, and support staff work together to meet the individual needs of every student. Teamwork and dedication make it possible to deliver a high quality educational program to our exceptional students.

Green Lake Elementary has a regular education program that includes two full-day kindergartens and first through fifth grade classes. Students “loop” in grades 1-2 and 3-4 – which means they have the same teacher for two years in a row. We have found that this is very beneficial for our students as they prepare to take the WASL – our statewide achievement test given to students in grades three, four, and five in the spring.

One of the goals of Green Lake School is universal literacy for all students. Our curricular target areas for this year are mathematics and writing in all curricular areas. Our PTA sponsors the “Dragon Tutors” program to help us achieve this goal. This program employs a volunteer force of parent/guardians, community supporters, and university and high school students who receive training in the fundamentals of reading and writing fluency. This group of dedicated individuals donated over 8,000 hours last year helping our students in various curricular areas. Over 95% of our parent/guardians attended parent/guardian/teacher conferences in the fall which helps facilitate communication between home and school.

Students are taught that technology is a valuable tool to aid in their learning experience. Green Lake School is wired for high speed Internet access in each classroom and the school library. Students in primary grades are learning keyboarding techniques to help facilitate later computer use. Upper grade students use computers to generate reports and complete research projects using the Internet. Students in grades 3-5 also acquire PowerPoint skills, which they use in report writing and presentations.

Our special education program includes a resource room teacher where eligible students receive additional assistance in targeted curricular areas. Green Lake is the home of Team A – two classrooms for students with multiple handicaps. We also house a Team A pre-school for students age 3-5. Both occupational and physical therapy services are available, as well as the services of our speech and communications specialist. We have a full-time teacher and instructional assistant in our sensory-motor intervention program, which serves students with academic delays that are sensory-motor based.

Our students receive physical education instruction from a full-time P.E. specialist in our well-equipped gymnasium – we even have a climbing wall! Students in grades K-5 receive 10 weeks of swimming instruction each year at Evans Pool in Green Lake Park. This program is subsidized by our Green Lake PTA. Students learn a variety of art techniques from our art specialist in the school’s multi-arts room. We offer an after school art club as well. Performing Arts are offered to students in grades 1-5 through our Drama Club, which presents a sensational play each spring. Extra-curricular activities also include: Green Lake All-Stars (a before school sports program), and our weekly Chess Club, Sewing Club, and Environmental Club.

Our staff, students, parent/guardians, and community members are very proud of Green Lake School. Their enthusiasm and dedication make it a very special place where all students receive a quality education in a warm, nurturing environment. I invite you to drop in and visit, or call me at school for more information or to arrange a tour of our school. We always welcome visitors.

I look forward to meeting you and showing you around!
