About Green Lake‎ > ‎

Team A - Special Education

Our diverse Green Lake School community includes students with different abilities who receive specialized instruction, including:

  • Team A, which includes two classrooms for students with multiple handicaps.
  • Visually impaired students, who are included in regular classrooms and also receive specialized instruction from a teacher and classroom assistant with training in Braille, adaptive technology, and low vision adaptations. The vision program works closely with the classroom teacher to ensure that all materials and instruction are customized for each student.
  • Students with sensory-motor based academic delays, for whom we provide a full-time teacher and instructional assistant in our sensory-motor intervention program.
These diverse students are an important presence at our school. As they learn and grow at Green Lake, they also help fellow students learn about respecting differences and caring about others.

Special Programs

Team A is comprised of our students with multiple disabilities.  The large, open classroom space makes GLES the perfect home for this superior program.  As with many of the other classes at GLES, this class is team-taught by a group of highly skilled professionals from a variety of disciplines, and has an outstanding reputation.  This important and unique program could not exist in a traditional size classroom, and requires the unique flexibility of space available at Green Lake Elementary School.  In addition, the presence of Team A at GLES means that we have a full-time nurse on staff, along with occupational and physical therapists.

All GLES students have the unique opportunity to work with and learn from their peers in Team A.  In many subtle and undefined, yet profound ways, the general education students benefit from their association with fellow students who deviate from the norm in significant ways.  Not only does daily interaction generate acceptance and appreciation, but as a model for hard work, compassion, and mutual respect, the students and teachers of Team A are unmatched.  These students and staff are very much a part of the fabric of GLES.
