Welcome to Green Lake Elementary's 'Active Transportation' page!
Please support active transportation at Green Lake Elementary by bicycling or walking to school this year!
We are very excited about the 2019-2020 school year at Green Lake Elementary and hopeful that your family will become supporters of the 'active transportation' community at the school.
No matter how far you live from Green Lake Elementary, we encourage you to bicycle or walk to school. The benefits are many, including providing your kid(s) with a bit of exercise, getting some fresh air, interacting with your nearby neighbors, and even helping decrease the volume of motor vehicles during the drop-off and pickup times.
There are a number of active-minded events scheduled this year that we encourage you to participate in:
Saturday, September 21, 2019 - Green Lake Elementary Bicycle Rodeo - With support from the Cascade Bicycle Club, we will be hosting a 'bicycle rodeo' event. Students can test their bicycle skills on the bicycle obstacle course and learn more about bicycle safety at the event. Representatives of the GLE Active Transportation committee will be onsite providing information and advice on how to bicycle and/or walk to school. 2pm-4pm at the GLE blacktop/playground.
October 2019 - Walk to School Month - During the month of October, students (and their parents) are encouraged to walk to and from school each day.
Wednesday, October 2nd - Walk To School Day- All of the GLE students are encouraged to walk to school on this day. The GLE Active Transportation Committee will host a 'Welcome Table' at the school that morning with special treats/etc.
BIKE TO SCHOOL MONTH ACTIVITIES:
April TBD, 2020 - Bike Safety Assembly presented by Cascade Bicycle Club. As part of the Friday morning assembly, representative(s) from Cascade Bicycle Club will share info about Bike to School Month and share 'bike safety' recommendations.
Wednesday, May 6, 2020 - Bike To School Day- Help us reach our goal of having at least 33% of the GLE student bike to school on this day while participating in this national event! We will have a greeting table near the front entrance of the school with stickers, free Clif Bars, snacks, swag and cycling/safety information in the morning before the school bell. Specific times to be announced soon.
Bike to School Challenge. Each student (or parent) keeps track of how many minutes that student spends bicycling during the month of May, documenting them on the Bike to School Month Calendar. All cycling counts, not just rides to and from school. There will be a prize for the school with the most minutes.
If you are interested parent who wants to join or support the Active Transportation Committee, please email Douglas Dohan (firstname.lastname@example.org)
Bike/Walking Trains - For the 2019/20 school year, we are encouraging the development of a number of 'Bike Trains' or 'Walk Trains' from a handful of different starting points within the GLE school zone. For each, the Bike or Walk Train lead will start at a designated location and bike or walk towards the school, picking up more GLE bicyclists or walkers (and their parents) along the way. The specific routes have yet to be confirmed, but will most likely use the safest bike routes available between the start point and the school. There are still a few areas within the school zone that could use a Bike Train and lead. If you are interested in being a Bike Train lead, please email Douglas Dohan via his email shown above.
Let's make this year's GLE school year the most active!
