Welcome to Green Lake Elementary's 'Active Transportation' page!
Please support active transportation at Green Lake Elementary by bicycling or walking this year!
We are very excited about the 2020-2021 school year at Green Lake Elementary and hopeful that your family will become supporters of the 'active transportation' community at the school.
With school being held online and most of us spending most of the day at home, it is that much more important that we spend some time outdoors bicycling or walking. We encourage you and your families to build some time in each of your days to bicycle or walk. The benefits are many, including providing your kid(s) with a bit of exercise, building healthy habits, getting some fresh air and interacting with your nearby neighbors.
UPCOMING EVENTS:
Join us Monday Oct 5th to Sunday, Oct 11th for the GLES WALK-AND-ROLL-A-THON DRAGON HUNT:
Packet Pickup: Saturday, October 3rd from 10am-2pm at Meridian Park near the Bagley Avenue N entrance. Staff and parents are encouraged to be there to help cheer students on and hand out items.
Set Up: Your family will receive one printed and named dragon per child. They will decorate that dragon and hang in a visible place in the GLES boundary OR along the Green Lake walking path. This could be on a utility pole, on your dog (during walks, of course), in your window or anywhere that is appropriate and can be spotted by passersby.
Starting Oct. 5, you can run, saunter, jog, walk or use your wheelchair to hunt as many dragons as you can!
We ask in the spirit of sportspersonship that you don't use a horse, a car or your bike/scooter. We also ask that you DON'T go out in groups of more than your family but that you DO wear a mask and wave hello to others you pass at a distance of 6 feet or more on your quest.
Why: To promote health, community and to raise money for the amazing GLES PTA. The PTA supports enrichment programs, supplemental staff and instructional assistance, among MANY other things.
Supporters of our school can donate per dragon recorded or a flat amount. There will be a link for electronic pledges and services provided to collect other forms of payment.

TBD BIKE TO SCHOOL MONTH ACTIVITIES:
April TBD - Bike Safety Assembly presented by Cascade Bicycle Club. As part of the Friday morning assembly, representative(s) from Cascade Bicycle Club will share info about Bike to School Month and share 'bike safety' recommendations.
May TBD - Bike To School Day- Help us reach our goal of having at least 33% of the GLE student bike to school on this day while participating in this national event! We will have a greeting table near the front entrance of the school with stickers, free Clif Bars, snacks, swag and cycling/safety information in the morning before the school bell. Specific times to be announced soon.
Bike to School Challenge. Each student (or parent) keeps track of how many minutes that student spends bicycling during the month of May, documenting them on the Bike to School Month Calendar. All cycling counts, not just rides to and from school. There will be a prize for the school with the most minutes.
If you are interested parent who wants to join or support the Active Transportation Committee, please email Douglas Dohan (douglasdohan@hotmail.com)

Let's make this year's GLE school year the most active!
With thanks!
