Our focus in K1 is on Social Responsibility and building the character of each child. We use "I statements" to best show our feelings and resolve conflict. We also have jobs each day for which we are responsible, and we meet twice a day to discuss new things, share our lives, air our concerns, and reflect on our actions.

Literacy
We follow the Teacher's College Writing Workshop Model as the basis of our Writing curriculum.  We also use Words Their Way for Phonics study and the Teacher's College Reading Workshop Model for learning how to infer, predict and deepen our comprehension of the stories we read. After every writing unit, we celebrate with a presentation of our stories.  We welcome loved ones to share in our accomplishments at these events.  We are very fortunate to have a wonderful Literacy Coach, Mrs. Somoza, who pushes our writing to new levels and ensures we are reading at the level appropriate to our abilities.

Science
Our Science Program is comprised of kits put together by the National Science Foundation.  This year we will be studying fish, snails, worms, isopods, wood and fabrics, all the while actively engaging in and documenting our investigations and observations.

Math
Seattle Public Schools uses the Everyday Math Curriculum. In Kindergarten, we develop a greater number sense, work on analyzing and creating patterns, measure, count money, and begin to delve into place value, geometric vocabulary, and algebraic number stories.

Physical Fitness
In P.E., we learn the proper rules for active games, we dance, and in the Spring, we'll be becoming stronger swimmers!!  Our P.E. teacher is Ms. Matthews.

Arts
We are lucky to have a dedicated Art Teacher, Ms. Wilson, who engages us in a variety of media twice per week for 35 minutes each time. We will also have Music class with Ms. Stewart once every other week.  She fills our 30 minutes with loads of fun, rhythm, song and dance and we wish we could see her more, we love her so.  Thanks to the PTA for funding her!! In addition, we do art projects in class, we sing daily in our room and weekly with our friends in Team A, and we engage in movement activities that wake up our brains!

Multiculturalism
We begin each day with a greeting from around the world.  When a new greeting is introduced, we discuss the language and country from which it is derived.  We also read books from around the world and sing songs from other countries.  We spend many weeks in the Winter learning about African American history. We also have Kindergarten Pen Pals from a school with a largely different demographic than our own.  Spanish class is available to students prior to school starting for a small tuition.  Please inquire with the office if you are interested in having your child participate in this great enrichment opportunity!

Technology
Students are given the opportunity to use computers during "Choice Time" and we are working on basic typing and mouse skills this year. We use various websites for Literacy education.  Thrice a year, students take a computer-based District assessment. Practicing our computer skills helps this assessment be more effective.

Expedition
We are studying ponds and amphibians this school year and incorporating this into different aspects of the curriculum.  We will visit Camp Long in West Seattle twice this year to investigate pond habitat and observe signs of amphibians that live there. We are working to better understand why nearly one third of amphibians in the world are threatened or extinct and how we can help!
