Community Connections
Situated on 3.3 acres one block from Green Lake Park, the most utilized park in Seattle, Green Lake Elementary School offers unique programs, partnerships and staffing that cannot be found in other elementary schools.
A true neighborhood school that is vital to the continuing health and well-being of the Green Lake and Roosevelt communities. Green Lake Elementary offers easy access to quality education, while reducing transportation costs and congestion. Even more importantly, the school is critical to the continued development of our urban village: as noted in the Comprehensive Plan, neighborhoods must offer quality educational facilities that can be easily and safely traversed on foot or by bicycle in order to retain households with children in the city.In addition to these general benefits, Green Lake Elementary has deep ties to both the residential and business communities of which it is a part. |
Green Lake School-Age Program (“GLSA”)Green Lake School-Age Program ("GLSA") provides an invaluable before- and after-school program, as well as regular “camps” during all school breaks. The staff escorts children to and from school, including all children involved in the many before-/after-school enrichment programs offered at Green Lake Elementary. This service is invaluable to the many working parents whose children would otherwise be unable to participate in after-school activities.
GLSA’s location—directly across the street from Green Lake Elementary—is ideal to the health of both the school and Green Lake United Methodist Church, which has housed it for 14 years. The children benefit the most: their before- and after-school program is close enough to utilize the school playground, yet it affords a change of scenery and a separate building that is both invigorating and safe.
The Hearthstone Retirement CommunityFor the last eight years, students at Green Lake Elementary School have visited, written to, and entertained our elderly neighbors in theHearthstone Retirement Community through our Grandpals program. This program not only encourages intergenerational contact, but also promotes reading and writing in a very social, non-competitive environment that has earned praise throughout the City. (See, e.g., Seattle’s Child at 21, June 2004 ed.) Hearthstone residents are part of the fabric of the school community: they volunteer at the school as tutors and reading partners, attend school concerts and plays, and contribute to the Green Lake PTA.
Green Lake NeighborhoodGreen Lake Elementary’s proximity to Green Lake and its environs has benefited our students in numerous ways: our classes may conduct science projects at the Lake, our field day festivities are held on the playing fields and the Bathhouse Theater has hosted our spring drama performances. In addition, our ready access to the Green Lake Public Library and Evans Pool greatly enhances the educational experience offered at Green Lake Elementary. Our classes take every opportunity to attend workshops and readings at the library and every child participates in our school-wide swimming program.
The residents and businesses of the Green Lake and Roosevelt neighborhoods recognize the importance of maintaining a healthy, vibrant school in the area and have provided monetary and volunteer support for our programs and initiatives. Local establishments contribute food and entertainment for our various social events, including our fall reception and Family Fun Nights, donate all manner of goods and services for our auction and Walk-a-Thon, and support our landscaping/maintenance efforts.
GLES is a vital part of its neighborhood. The school both relies upon and contributes to the local businesses, community centers and residences. The proximity of Green Lake Elementary to the urban villages of Green Lake and Roosevelt is ideal to all involved: the students, their parents, the staff, and the neighboring community.
