FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Green Lake Families:

The snow glittered like a snow globe this weekend when I was skiing.  I have never seen anything quite like it.  The sky was blue, the sun was shining, and it was snowing.  All I could think of is when you turn the snow globe upside down and shake it and watch it come down so softly and with the sunlight reflected on the snow it looked Magical!  Friday’s assembly was also magical as we did a Flash Mob presentation for the kids for their dragon reward.  Staff had a lot of fun preparing for the surprise and as I observed, students were joyous as they watched and then as they joined in the dancing!  Hope you all were able to experience something magical this weekend as well.

Our Garden has received the distinction of “Certified Wildlife Habitat” from the National Wildlife Federation.  This is a great honor.  If you haven’t ever stopped by our wonderful garden, be sure to do so.  I just found out last week that the new sculptures represent the baskets for collecting food that is connected to our Olallie garden name.  Olallie is a berry so the basket sculptures were created to collect the berries. I thought that was very clever.

Please be sure to read the updated student handbook that is attached today.  We think we finally have the info correct and ready to share.

Our last Kindergarten and new family tour will be this Thursday from 1-2 pm.  The tours have been well attended and have gone smoothly.  Thanks to Tracy Tavis and her crew for planning these and for our staff for accommodating big groups of people touring through.

Enjoy the week.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Green Lake Families:

We have gone from winter to spring in the matter of a week.  I hope you all enjoyed the resplendent weekend.  It was soothing to soak in the sunshine and appealing to see the blue skies.

We are gearing up for a busy week this week.  Aside from the daily work of the students in each of their classrooms, staff is preparing for our third lab day for Readers Workshop on  Wednesday.  It really keeps us on our toes as we model the work that we hope teachers across the district will implement in their classrooms.  All the primary teachers were in a lab school on Friday to enhance their own skills as well.

Wednesday on our early release day we had a great workshop from an EDM trainer.  It was very informative and helpful.  Tomorrow our BLT will be looking over the surveys you all filled out before winter break on MAGIC.  Thanks to everyone for giving us feedback.  Just a quick look tells me that what we are doing is definitely making an impact and students and families are enjoying the outcomes.

No word yet on when we will be able to move back into the lunchroom.  In the meantime, our wonderful PTA granted some dollars by allowing me to hire an hourly person to help with the supervision.  Katie Lee, our adult crossing guard, will be helping with supervision during lunchtime.  Thanks so much PTA and families for making this possible.

I did meet again with Gretchen DeDecker and NAOIP in regards to the projects they are considering to help us with here.  The work however, would not take place until September.  Keep your fingers crossed that they choose us as one of their project sites as we can surely use any improvements they are willing to lend a hand.

We also have an assembly this Friday to celebrate our completion of trustworthiness.  It starts promptly after attendance is taken in the morning.  Please join us if you can.

We will be holding three tours this year for new families assigned to and interested in Green Lake School.  We will have our first one in the evening on February 7th from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.  The other two are during the day on the 9th from 9:30 to 10:30 and then again on the 16th from 1 to 2 p.m.  If you can help it would be appreciated.  Tracy Tavis is our marketing chair and will be coordinating the tours.

Enjoy the week.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Winter Greetings to Green Lake Families:

January is coming to a close and it has flown by.  My dad used to say as you get older, time goes by faster and faster and now that I am older, (39!), time flies.  It was good to get a full week under our belts and we will be working hard the next three weeks before mid-winter break.

Tonight please join the students and Ms. Sabicky for the instrumental music concert here in the gym at 6:30 p.m.  It will be a great performance and the students have worked hard to present to you.  There will be a second one later in the spring as well so we can see the progress the students have made.

I hope all of you have noticed the beautiful works of art in the Ollalie garden.  We hope you will appreciate the sculptures like any piece of art work.  It is not a climbing toy to play on so we ask that when you visit during school and after school hours to respect this request.

I also had a question before the winter storm about the guidelines for the garden before school.  Once students are on campus, it is the expectation that they go to the playground unless they are with their parent, are on patrol, or are eating breakfast inside.  Once a child arrives to school and the parent leaves, it is our responsibility to supervise and keep them safe.  It is also a quiet time for teachers who are planning and prepping for the day ahead. It is much easier to plan and prep if students are not out running around the upper playground and garden.  We appreciate your support.

Peace.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Winter Greetings to Green Lake Families:

What an unexpected surprise our snow days were.  It is such a humbling lesson to know that no matter how hard we try to plan and schedule our days, nature always has a way of letting us know who is really in charge!  I hope you were all able to enjoy the snow a little bit.  I know it wreaks havoc with schedules and work and is treacherous for driving and yet, the pace slows down, the beauty arrests me in my tracks, allowing the time to stop and enjoy.  Up in my neck of the woods, we had at least a foot and ½ of snow letting me know winter is still among us.

Tomorrow is a half-day furlough day for all staff in the building due to funding cutbacks.  Staff are not allowed to be on the premises or to look at email or make phone calls pertaining to school matters after 12:00.  PLEASE DO NOT COUNT ON YOUR CHILD BEING ABLE TO SIT IN THE OFFICE TO BE PICKED UP AS THERE WILL BE NO ONE IN THE OFFICE TO SUPERVISE.   We have scheduled some staff to come in later in case there is an emergency, but it is for emergencies only such as medical issues or busses not being on time.  Thanks so much for your cooperation.  We would much rather have school and have your child here.

Due to our snow weather last week, we will reschedule our MLK observance.  We will have a format similar to last year, and will let you know when it will take place.  Right now it looks like it might be this Friday, the 27th.

It is much easier to plan and prep if students are not out running around the upper playground and garden.  We appreciate your support.

Peace.

SPECIAL SHOWING
Hamilton International Middle School PTSA presents the documentary Finding Kind on Tuesday, January 31 at 7 p.m. in the Hamilton Commons located at 1610 N 41st Street.  This public showing is free but donations are welcome to offset the costs.  The documentary is targeted at children 11 and older and their adults. For more information on the public showing contact Charlotte Trelease.

In Finding Kind, filmmakers Lauren Parsekian and Molly Thompson, who met while in school at Pepperdine University, set out in a cross country journey of discovery and education. Interviewing women and girls along the way about their lives and experiences, Parsekian and Thompson find, among all of the unique personal stories, some universal truths about growing up as girls. Finding Kind is a document of that journey, and of the filmmakers’ quest to take these experiences and find a common ground of kindness and mutual respect.

In addition to all of the individual girls and women who share their personal experiences about girl on girl bullying with the filmmakers, Parsekian and Thompson include interviews with respected experts and authors in the fields of psychology, education, and the interrelationships of women and girls.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Green Lake Families:

I will be holding a principal’s coffee hour, 10:30 to 11:30 this week (January 13th).  Please come for questions, answers, and comments on what is happening at Green Lake.

Please consider having your child participate in our breakfast and lunch programs.   Tom Douglas, chef of so many fabulous restaurants in Seattle, is teaming up with Seattle Public Schools to start offering more nutritious meals for breakfast and lunch.  Ms. Mary Ann, our new lunch lady, is encouraged by the partnership and wanted to spread the news to our Green Lake Families.

As you see above, January 24th will be a furlough day for all staff in the building.  This is due to funding and cutbacks.  This is like the day before school started when staff are not allowed to be on premises or even allowed to look at email or make phone calls that pertain to school after the 12:00 hour.

After break, I always like to remind you about some safety procedures.  Please remember not to drop off students in the handicapped area.  If you are bringing your child before school, we ask that you take them to the gate of the playground as students are not to be in the building before school unless they eat breakfast or are on patrol.  If you arrive late, and busses are gone, you can pull up in front to watch your child walk into the office.  Please do not ever leave your child  across the street and have them walk across outside of the crosswalk.  If you drop off across the street, please remind your child to use the crosswalk even if the crossing guards are not present.  Last but not least, school starts at 8:55.  Being on time and at school when you are not sick is very important.  Please do your utmost to have students here on time every day.  This month, we will be putting out our student handbook that we have updated.  We hope this will be a helpful tool when you have questions.

Please join us when you can for our assemblies. They happen at the beginning of each change of character study and at the end to celebrate our work.  Our next assembly is in February.  However, next week, we will again be celebrating MLK day as we did last year.   On Friday, January 20th, each class will work on a presentation piece for other groups of students in the building.  Classrooms will sign up to see three or four different presentations throughout the school.  We have two sessions this year.  One before the 10:15 recess and one right before students go home.  You are welcome to come and join us to watch the different presentations.  They were very high quality last year and I expect the same caliber this year just knowing our Green Lake staff.

Peace.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Happy  New Year Green Lake Families!  Welcome back to school and a New Year.  It will be fun to talk with students this week and hear the stories from break and what families did to celebrate the holidays.  I hope 2012 brings you all that you wish.

I enjoyed skiing and being at home this year.  My daughter was home from college and my son and daughter-in-law were back on the east coast so we had a quieter holiday but very relaxing.  I was able to get a lot done around here as well, with all the children and staff out of the building.

We were able to help several of our families have a better holiday this year thanks to your generosity.  We so appreciate all of you responding with gift cards, presents from the giving tree at GLSA, putting together the bags, and your all around support for those in need.  It was such a pleasure to see the looks of gratitude on the faces of the family members knowing the holidays would be a little brighter.
Many thanks go out to all the volunteers who put in the time to help with the tree lot this year.  I am astounded by all of you who are so dedicated to making this happen and making so many families happy with the tradition of coming to Green Lake to get their tree.  I know I enjoyed mine immensely.  Thanks, thanks, thanks.

While I was here, many of you were volunteering to improve our physical site.  If you haven’t already seen our two new beautiful art installations in the garden, be sure to stop by and see them.  They really make our garden feel and look like a park.  I want to thank the families who helped with the installation of these.  Green Lake is now environmentally  as well as art friendly!
We also had several dads work on the play structure to secure some of the platforms.  A big thanks to Chris Peterson, Scott Driscoll, Rick Hughes and Jonathan Alberts for their work to make the play structure a safer place for kids to play.

Gretchen DeDecker, Jonathan Alberts, and I met with the company who may be interested in helping us complete our lunchroom.  It was an informational meeting for the company to see what the request was and if they could manage it.  NAIOP looked at both our lunchroom and our playground.   It seems like they may choose one of these options to help us improve.  Keep your fingers crossed.

Although there has been a lot of work done to enclose the lunchroom, we have not been given the okay to return to the space as of yet.  I will let you know when this happens.  Like you, I am hoping for a long term solution to the space use.

I cannot believe it is January and  I wish it would slow down a little.  Green Lake staff is working hard with your children as we have a lot to accomplish before the end of the year.  I look forward to seeing and hearing from you.  I hope you all had a chance to take the online survey  so we can look at what is working well and what families still feel unsure about.  It is such a pleasure to be at Green Lake and I love this community and school.  It is one of the many things I am thankful for in this New Year.

Peace.

First through fifth grade families, please go to the attached link and take our family survey on MAGIC.  We ask that you repeat it for each additional child. If your child is in kindergarten, you may skip taking the survey.  Please go to:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/GreenLake2011

Today is the final day to take the survey.  We would like to have a high percentage of families taking the survey to be able to have accurate data.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

If you are able, Christina and her GLSA staff have set up a giving tree with tags for those who have special needs and requests.  Please stop by the daycare across the street, select a tag or two, and return the gift item by Tuesday, December 15th.  These will be distributed this week.

Report cards will be going home the end of this week.  This year the Seattle School District revised their report cards so they are now standardized for all schools and done online.  Teachers will input their grades for the subjects taught, and in the cases where Green Lake doesn’t offer a curriculum listed, those areas will remain blank.

Another feature is that all attendance is to be automatically transferred from eSIS, our computerized student data base.  Unfortunately, the figures are not accurate as the tardies are converted to absences so they do not accurately reflect the actual number of times your child was late and it distorts the true number of absences.  This correction will appear in your child’s report card envelope.

Please be cautious.  This morning, our adult crossing guard reported to me that someone from Green Lake Elementary ran our crossing guard flags.   We now report these license plates to the police and you will receive a ticket.   This may have very well been an oversight on the parent’s end but a very dangerous one.  When dropping off or picking up, remember the speed is 20 mph.  You should always pay attention to any marked or unmarked crosswalk as it is the law to stop for pedestrians.  You must always stop for the crossing guards and should not venture into the crosswalk area until all people are safely across the walk including the crossing guards.  Just imagine your child needing to cross in the walk and how you would feel if anything happened to them and it will immediately slow you down and focus your driving.

Eventually, we will have lines across the road marking a place to stop but the recommended space between the crosswalk and your car is at least 15 feet.  We will be rearranging our drop- off and bus areas as well and, as soon as this is complete, I will give you the information on how this will look for Green Lake.

We know the days are getting colder and the temptation to come in and wait in the foyer beckons.  Here’s what we request for less congestion and quieter halls at the end of the day.  If you arrive early we don’t mind you waiting quietly in the foyer until the bell rings. When the bell rings, we kindly request that you move outside so students and teachers have room to get students to the bus and to their parents waiting for them.  We do like to have the students move safely, and the less noise in the halls at the end of the day helps students stay focused and present.  Thanks for your support.

Please note on the calendar that all SEA represented employees will be observing a half-day furlough on January 24th in the afternoon.  It is not too soon to start to find child care as this means all of our staff who work with your children are expected to go home by 12:00 noon.  When we return from break and schedules are finalized, we will send you additional information.  Until then, please note the date and plan on alternate arrangements.

Since this will be the last bulletin until the New Year, let me be the first to wish you much laughter and love as you end this year and double the same in 2012.  I continue to count my fortune in the support from families, the dedication of my staff and the gift of being with your children.  I chose this profession because of your child’s love of life and each day brings me this look through their eyes.  I am never bored and each day is a wonderful adventure.  Thank you.

Peace in the New Year,

Principal Bowers

FROM THE NURSE

We coordinate with the local health district in protecting children from certain symptoms of communicable diseases.
·         If your child has any of these symptoms, please keep him/her home or make appropriate child care arrangements.

·         APPEARANCE, BEHAVIOR – unusually tired, pale, lack of appetite, difficult to wake, confused or irritable.  This is sufficient reason to exclude a child from school.
·         EYES – thick mucous or pus draining from the eye or pink eye (conjunctivitis).
·         FEVER – temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.
·         GREENISH NOSE DISCHARGE, AND/OR CHRONIC COUGH – should be seen by a health care provider.  These conditions may be contagious and require treatment.
·         SORE THROAT – especially with fever or swollen glands in the neck.
·         DIARRHEA – 3 or more watery stools in a 24 hours period especially if the child acts or looks ill.
·         VOMITING – vomiting 2 or more times within the last 24 hours.
·         RASH – body rash, especially with fever or itching.  Diaper rashes, heat rashes and allergic reactions are not contagious.
·         EAR INFECTIONS WITHOUT FEVER – do not need to be excluded, but the child needs to get medical treatment and follow-up.  Untreated ear infections can cause permanent hearing loss.
·         SCABIES – children may not return to school until they have been properly treated.

IF YOUR CHILD SHOWS ANY OF THE ABOVE SYMPTOMS AT SCHOOL, IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO PICK HIM/HER UP FROM SCHOOL.

·         Bringing a child to school with any of the above symptoms puts other children and staff at risk of getting sick.
·         If all parents keep their sick children at home, we will have stronger, healthier and happier children.
·         While we regret any inconvenience this may cause, in the long run this means fewer lost work days and less illness for parents too.

FROM THE PTA

Many thanks to those that donated gift cards last month.  With your help, we were able to create a nice basket of goodies and gift cards to help out our families in need in November.  We'd like the December basket to be even better.  If you haven't had a chance to do so, or if you are feeling extra generous, please purchase a gift card when you are out shopping this week and pass it to Debbie or Karen in the office.  We will be making baskets again next week to be passed out on Friday before we are off for break.

MAGIC Corner

So much of what I put here has come from conversations where a parent says; “you should put that in the bulletin because I don’t think families understand that.”

This week the conversation came up about why we chose to do all multi-age across the building. As we thought about it from a program perspective, we thought about progression and what that should look and feel like as a student.

Kindergarten is the first experience of public school for students.  We want this to be a strong start for families as well as their children.  Kindergarten is also hard to combine with first as there are so many foundations that need to be built over the year.

Combining first and second grades together made sense for a variety of reasons.  Firstly, we are being pro-active in that we know every year because of enrollment, one or two classes would have to be combined. It makes more sense to combine classes in a pro-active way instead of reactive way.  Secondly, our literacy curriculum, science and other subjects except math lends itself to this type of configuration as it is differentiated and teaches to the level of the child.  Lastly, this provides the stepping stone for the students who will eventually move into a multi-age of three grades.  Students need to experience on a smaller level what it feels like to work with students at different levels.  If we sent all the first and second graders up without any experience in a multi-age classroom, the transition to our 3-4-5 experience could be extremely challenging.

I love these types of questions and hope to continue this dialogue in the New Year.  Don’t forget to fill out our survey.

SPECIAL ALERT!!!!!
Volunteers are still needed to sign up for shifts at the tree lot.  This important fundraiser for our school is only for three weeks and is lots of fun!  We need all families to sign up for at least one shift to help make this sale a success.  Please keep in mind that a tree committee person will be at the lot for each shift to help with lifting and moving trees.  Go to:  http://www.greenlakedragons.org/pta-tree-sale and sign up for a shift or two. So far we’ve had lots of fun and the kids love helping at the lot as well. Thanks for all you do!

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

We are truly fortunate in the Green Lake School community to have so many caring individuals who want to help our less fortunate families during this special season.  Thank you so much for your generous donations of gift cards.  It helped to create Thanksgiving baskets for a number of those who might otherwise not have had as good a holiday.  We are continuing to collect them for holiday baskets and beyond.

If you are able, Christina and her GLSA staff have set up a giving tree with tags for those who have special needs and requests.  Please stop by the daycare across the street, select a tag or two, and return the gift item by Tuesday, December 15th.  These will be distributed prior to the winter break.

Please be sure to read the MAGIC Corner today and complete our survey.  We promised to gather parent input on how our program was benefiting our students.  It is an electronic survey, open until Monday, December 12th.  The link is below in the MAGIC Corner.

Our students will be presenting their Musical Theater performance and show what they have been working on in their after school class.  It will be Friday, December 9th,  7 p.m., in the school gym.   We will have a donation jar by the door as this s a fundraiser for the school play and the drama dragons.  The kids will also perform one or two songs at 9:30 a.m. earlier in the day for the entire school.

We know the days are getting colder and the temptation to come in and wait in the foyer at the end of the day is tempting.  Here’s what we request for less congestion and less noise at the end of the day.  If you arrive early we don’t mind you waiting quietly in the foyer until the bell rings. Dear Parents;

With the holiday season coming up, we know that many of you will be going on winter vacation—but don’t be away for too long!  The Be Here Get There campaign wants to remind you that every day in school matters.  The classroom with the most improved attendance in October won $40.00 in pizza from Pagliacci Pizza and a prize for their teacher.  As the month of November comes to a close, the classroom with the most improved attendance will win an awesome classroom trophy and cool wrist bands for every student in their class.  Next month, the classroom with the most improved attendance will win cupcakes from Trophy cupcakes!

I had a wonderful discussion with a parent today about the half hour we as teachers keep saying  that the kids now have that they didn’t before.  In the discussion with the parent, it was clear that we have not been explaining this in a way that makes sense from the students’ point of view.  I will now attempt to explain how this half hour that kids are not eating in their classroom  pans out into instructional time for the intermediate classrooms.

Last year students ate in their classrooms and teachers supervised them.  This year, the teachers are not eating in the classroom with the students, giving them their contractual break.  This had happened during art or gym.  Now when the fifth  graders go to gym and/or art/literacy, the teacher who used to take a break is teaching a math or science course to a set of third or fourth grade students.  This rotates throughout the day.   Although your child still has the same time for recess and lunch, the time we were able to capture from all teachers eating and planning together at the same time equals out to more content area learning.  Where science had been once or twice a week, it is now every day.  Students in all classrooms have smaller math groups because of the lunchroom change.

We have heard from Gretchen DeDecker that a organization who sponsors big projects in the school district is interested in helping Green Lake enclose our lunchroom, help us heat it, and get sprinklers in there to make it safe and warm.  I meet with the organization and Gretchen on December 12th.  I am looking forward to working with them to solve this dilemma as soon as possible.  I do know our committee has definitely made it as warm as 53 degrees in there last Friday so even without heat, the work to enclose the space has created warmth.   Thanks again lunchroom team.

Welcome back from our long Thanksgiving weekend.  I hope you all made incredible memories you will treasure throughout your life.   I was very happy spending a relaxing day where I did not cook or clean.  We decided to go out to a lovely dinner and I think it may become a tradition!

As you know, we will begin eating in our classrooms this week.  Students will eat in their homerooms at their desks similar to last year.  Supervisor(s) will roam the rooms as the students eat and there will be a common area where students can compost, recycle, and throw away their garbage.   I know the students will miss their lunch buddies during these cold months, and I anticipate using the space again when the weather warms up.

I am awaiting the news that central office will be able to fund the enclosure of our lunchroom soon so we can continue to use the space.   Our lunchroom crew is continuing with their temporary measures to enclose the area and find a heat source if the funding from central office is not found.   I want to assure you that the half hour we gained in instruction is not lost.  We will make this work so that optimum learning time is kept at the maximum.

Thanks to everyone who joined your child’s teacher for a conference.  It is a luxury elementary schools indulge in as the time to talk to you individually about your child is so important.  If you were unable to make a conference, please contact your child’s teacher and see what can be done.  We value these conversations and would like to brag about 100% participation in conferencing this year.

As we move into the next three weeks before we break for winter, students will be taking the MAP test, participate in a musical theatre performance, and have one more assembly on responsibility before the new year.

The Mayor’s campaign to raise attendance and lower tardies continues all year.  Please make every effort to get your child here and on time.  Valuable learning time is lost when a child misses school or comes late.  This is our data in the last month (November 1 to 28th):  167.5 absences and 191 lates.

We would like to let you know that our nurse, Kathleen Kutz, will remain on medical leave for the remainder of this school year.  We wish her all the best and appreciate the great work that Ruth Corsi and Kate Bobo are doing in her absence.  Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time.

Peace,
Principal Bowers

Family Movie Night, which was scheduled for Friday December 2nd, has been cancelled.  It will be rescheduled in the winter months.  We are sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused. Thank you.

INCLEMENT WEATHER

We are including this information again this week in the event of inclement weather.  Please keep this in a safe place should the weather turns.  Thanks!

When we are expecting snow or inclement weather, a Central Office team continually monitors conditions across the District.  That includes having staff drive some of the streets that are typically more treacherous in snow and ice.  After consulting with other agencies, we decide whether to delay school by two hours or if a closure is necessary. That decision is typically made by 5:30 a.m.

You can learn if there is a school delay or closure through:

·         local TV and radio stations;
·         the District website at www.seattleschools.org;
·         an automated phone call you will receive; and
·         the Public Schools Emergency Communications System at www.SchoolReport.org

Staff and families will receive one of the following four messages:

1.      Seattle Public Schools: Schools open on time – buses operating on snow routes. No door-to-door service. No Preschool or Head Start.

2.      Seattle Public Schools: Two hours late – buses operating on snow routes. No door-to-door service. No Preschool or Head Start.

3.      Seattle Public Schools: Two hours late – buses operating on regular routes. No door-to-door service. No Preschool or Head Start.

4.      Seattle Public Schools: Schools closed.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Greetings Green Lake Families!

We are sending out a special edition of the principal’s newsletter today to give you some information that we have been receiving from the school district and others on inclement weather, Camp Fire, and meals for the holidays.  On behalf of the Green Lake staff, I want to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a very happy Thanksgiving Holiday.

Peace,
Principal Bowers

FROM THE NURSES

We nurses would like to apologize for a misunderstanding regarding the head lice no-nit policy.  According to the parent letter we found on the school nurses website and sent home, the policy was no nits. We did not know that this policy has changed.

It is the updated position of Seattle Public Schools that head lice should not disrupt the education process. This position is also supported by the National Association of School Nurses.  Children found with live head lice should just be referred to you for treatment.  Data does not support school exclusion for nits. Safeguarding education comes first.

For those of you that had a student miss school, we apologize for the inconvenience and miscommunication about head lice. Please feel free to contact us in the nurse’s office with any questions or concerns regarding head lice treatment, prevention and policy. Also, please check with your student’s child care provider about their head lice policy as it may differ from ours.

Sincerely,

Ruth Corsi RN
Kate Bobo RN

Segmentation Analysis: What is it?
Using the report cards, the district categorized each school in one of five performance levels, a process called “segmentation.”2 In the following graphs, schools are charted on two factors:
1. Absolute achievement: the percentage of students in a school who met district goals in reading and mathematics on state tests, earned credits and graduated on time.
2. Achievement growth: the percentage of students in a school whose achievement improved from one year to the next in regard to the school’s annual growth target, which varies from school to school.3
These performance measures compare only two years of data and are weighted heavily by test scores, but they are a good place to start when comparing schools.4
The SPS table below explains the color-coding and definition of schools by segmentation levels.5
1 Seattle Public School’s use of growth and achievement to rank and display school performance is similar to accountability measures first developed for school districts in Colorado, which have since been adopted by Arizona, Indiana, and Massachusetts, with more states interested in adopting this accountability model in 2011.
2 A detailed explanation of the performance rankings can be found here: http://www.seattleschools.org/area/strategicplan/segmentation.pdf.
3 SPS uses a complex index to create the achievement and growth factors, including points for meeting district-wide strategic planning goals, school growth targets, and matched student scores in reading and math. For a more detailed explanation of the index, contact Seattle Public Schools Department of Education Technology, Research, Evaluation and Assessment, http://www.seattleschools.org/area/siso/index.dxml.
4 Other measures of school quality might include: student retention, student engagement (tardiness, activities), student attraction to the school, teacher attraction and retention, and school climate surveys.
5 SPS used two absolute performance measures to define schools in Level 3 (yellow); they also did not indicate growth performance measures for certain levels.
