swimming
Our swimming program is a unique piece of our physical education curriculum. Developing swimming and water lifesaving skills is especially important for young people in the Puget Sound region. There are many opportunities for lifelong fitness and recreation after developing a foundation of water safety and skill. |
Each class, from kindergarten through fifth grade, receives 8-10 swimming lessons each year. The physical education instructor teaches the class with help from the students’ classroom teacher. The class is also lifeguarded by a second lifeguard at the expense of the PTA. In addition to these certified instructors, many parents help keep this program afloat with their dedicated help in and out of the water. This is a "during school" program and bus transportation is provided. While this is surely only a drop in the bucket, we hope it inspires students and their families to continue lessons and water activities.
Our work at Green Lake School is groundbreaking. Our swimmers are incredibly comfortable with the water, and many are ready to enter competitive swimming, even as young as Kindergarten and First grade. We have varied skills in all of our classes, and all kids show improvement through the regular, free access to water time that they receive as a part of their regular Health and Fitness subject matter. By the time children leave Green Lake, they have logged in 30 hours of water time! This is unmatched in public education. The skills and comfort for a lifetime of fitness greatly benefit the community, making more active and physically fit citizens.
