Dragon Hunt

The Dragon Hunt began in 2020 when we couldn’t gather in person but still wanted a way to connect, create community, and get outside. It was such a hit that it’s become an annual GLES tradition! The Dragon Hunt takes place every spring; exact dates and details are shared closer to the event.

Event Details

Timing: May 1 - May 18, 2026
Location: Within the GLES boundary and along the Green Lake walking path

Tips for a great Dragon Hunt:
  • Decorate and hang your dragon early.
  • Choose a spot visible from the sidewalk or path.
  • Make your dragon weather‑friendly if posting outdoors (laminating or taping helps).
  • Keep your tracking sheets handy when you’re out and about.

Who’s It For

All Green Lake Elementary students and families are welcome to participate. The event is flexible, creative, and fun for all ages!

How to Participate

1. Decorate your dragon

Before the event all students will receive a uniquely named dragon and tracking sheets. Dragons can be decorated with anything, so get creative!

2. Post your dragon in a visible spot

Dragons can be displayed anywhere visible and appropriate within the GLES boundary or along the Green Lake walking path.

Mark your dragon's location on the shared map, and do not include its name!  If you can't add your dragon to the map, contact the PTA through email, or on discord/facebook and someone will help you out.

Over the years, families have hung dragons:

  • in car windows
  • on backpacks
  • in storefront windows
  • on utility poles
  • on a dog’s harness (during walks)
  • in apartment windows
  • on porches and fences

3. Look for dragons around the neighborhood

Walk, roll, bike, or stroll and mark down the dragons you spot on your tracking sheet. Check the map to help you in your dragon quest.

4. Turn in your completed sheet

At the end of the event, students return their tracking sheets and prizes are awarded.
